Sometimes it is very easy to say the wrong thing to your mate when they are feeling down. So, we've got a rundown of 13 things you should definitely not say to someone who is feeling depressed...

1. Cheer up yeah?

2. There are worse things happening to other people in the world.

3. Do you just want some attention?

4. You have to choose to be happy.

5) We all have bad days.

6) You don't look like you're depressed.

7) Stop feeling sorry for yourself.

8) What reason have you got to be sad?

9) Not everything is about you.

10) Just stop worrying so much.

11) Lighten up and just go out!

12) Stop being selfish, your life is so good!

13) Life's tough sometimes, just get on with it.

So, instead of stating the obvious, telling your mate to cheer up and putting their low mood down to just a bad day, try and empathise with them. Plan something fun for you to do together, let them know that you are there if they need to talk and share with them what you do when you're having a bad day or worried about something. Know that they are not choosing to be sad and will appreciate you being there for them during a rough time.
