Is the pill making you depressed? You're not the only one.

At the start of October, The Guardian published an article after the results of a study done by the University of Copenhagen of 1 million Danish women confirmed a link between hormonal contraceptives and depression.

We ran a poll on some of I'm Not Fine's Facebook page to find out how the pill was effecting girls at Kingston.

The poll showed 53% of girls at Kingston said the pill gave them depression, while 46% said it gave them mood swings.

Now things are starting to make sense...

Women everywhere took to Twitter in outrage that it took such a large study to acknowledge what we've been telling our doctors for years.

Some have felt the effects of the pill on their mental health so strongly that they have opted for other forms of contraception and noticed drastic improvements in their moods.

Then at the end of October, The Guardian posted this article about the new male contraceptive jab which proved to be nearly 96% effective - almost as effective as the pill. However, trials were halted as the men testing the drug started to experience unpleasant side effects, one in particular - depression. Naturally, us females felt a bit hard done by.

And despite an overwhelming amount of women speaking up about the negative effects the pill had on their mental health, some even claim it helped them.

While only a measly 2% of Kingston girls agree that the pill eased symptoms of their already existing depression, it goes to show, the pill effects everyone differently and while it might not work for you, there are plenty of other contraceptive options out there.

If the pill is having negative effects on your mental health, there's a special sexual health clinic every Monday and Thursday between 6:00pm-8:00pm at Penryhn Road Medical Centre where you can find a different contraceptive method which is right for you.
